About this collection

The Special Collections and College Archives at Gettysburg College has over 1,200 pieces of historic sheet music, dating from the 1830s to the 1960s and 70s. This website represents an effort to digitize a portion of that collection for the use of music, history, and art history students as well as anyone with an interest in historic music.

This is a digital collection of selected works from the over 1,200 pieces of historic sheet music from Special Collections and College Archives. The pieces featured here represent the Civil War Era Collection, and gifts of Thomas Y. Cooper, Jay P. Brown '51, Doug Brouder ’84, Gary Hawbaker '66, and others. They feature five different periods or genres: Antebellum and Civil War Eras (1830-1865), Reconstruction (1866-1877), Tin Pan Alley (1878-1913), World War I (1914-1919), and Interwar Period and Jazz (1920-1938). These materials are offered for the educational use of music, history, and art history students as well as anyone with an interest in historic music.
